This Canadian man tested out his 379,000-mile 2019 Tesla Model 3 to see how it would fare when it came to range and battery health.

YouTube channel Drive Protected was invested in a long-running ‘Tesla Resurrection’.

The car at the center of this was a Model 3 Standard Range Plus with approximately 379,000 miles on the clock.

Now it was time to conduct a range test, driving the car from 100 percent to zero percent.

What happened when this 2019 Tesla Model 3 was taken out for a range test?

Drive Protected took his Tesla Model 3 out for a range test in southern Manitoba, one of Canada’s provinces.

The aim was to get the car down from a full charge to zero percent.

At the beginning of the range test, the car displayed 239 miles of estimated range, which host Eric predicted the car wouldn’t get to.

After 44 miles, the battery was down to 75 percent.

It would get to 50 percent at 86 miles, and then down to 25 percent at 129 miles.

The car reached 0 percent just a short distance away from a supercharger.

Fortunately, there was a buffer area, which allowed the car to get the final stretch.

At the end of the test, the car had reached 182 miles by the time its battery had depleted.

That’s roughly 57 miles short of what had been anticipated.

This was obviously disappointing for Eric and his team.

What went wrong on the range test?

They put the disappointing result down to a few factors.

The weather was cited as a contributing factor, as a massive thunderstorm and tornadoes had hit the area during the test, meaning the car was pushing up against some serious headwinds.

There was also the fact that they used wide Continental tires on Martian wheels, causing some rolling resistance and aerodynamic issues.

And finally, there was the fact that this test was undertaken on Canada’s Highway 75, which was notoriously bumpy.

“So even if it’s a not as good a result as we were hoping, it’s still a large amount better than before,” Eric concluded.

That’s still a positive.

Here’s what a battery health test revealed about this Model 3

Up next, the team ran Tesla’s official in-car Battery Health test.

This drained the battery to zero percent using the HVAC system and charged it back to 100 percent over a 16 hour period.

What did the results show?

It was a positive result, as the battery still had 99 percent remaining capacity.

Speaking to a local mechanic confirmed that the Model 3’s structural and mechanical condition was ‘immaculate’.

For a car that had racked up hundreds of thousands of miles, it was exceptionally well-kept.

The only fixes needed pertained to some rust on the rockers and an issue with the fender.

All in all, the team had done an excellent job.

“Given the larger, less aerodynamic wheels on the car versus its original wheels, I felt the range test results were always going to be impacted,” Eric told Supercar Blondie.

“That said, with the newer LFP pack installed and the vehicle still showing 99% battery health, this car is well positioned to exceed 1,000,000 km over its lifetime.

“With more appropriately sized, aerodynamic wheels — and on a day with less wind interference — I believe this car could have come close to, if not matched, its estimated 386 km range.”

Range tests can produce some illuminating results, whether carried out in extremely cold weather in Mongolia or stacking American EVs up against Chinese rivals.
