Jordan Henderson is set to play no further part in the World Cup as he needs surgery on the freak wrist injury he suffered in England’s last 16 victory over Mexico.
The Brentford midfielder landed awkwardly as he slipped while climbing over the advertising hoardings during the celebrations after the thrilling 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium.
After leaving the field on a stretcher and receiving oxygen, Henderson was taken to hospital in Mexico City and did not travel back to England’s training base in Kansas City with the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad. A member of England’s medical staff stayed behind with him.
It is a significant blow for the 36-year-old former Liverpool captain, who was an unused substitute against Mexico.
He earned his 90th cap for England when he came off the bench against Panama in the group stage — his only appearance of the tournament so far.
“I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist,” England manager Tuchel told reporters post-match.
“It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.”
England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who scored twice to help set up a quarter-final meeting with Norway, added: “He (Henderson) is in a bit of bother, but our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him.”
