X-Men ’97‘s executive producers just revealed how many seasons they actually want. They shared their surprisingly ambitious plans for the animated series revival’s long-term future.
Marvel producer Eric Lewald on Brad Winderbaum’s long-term plans for X-Men ’97
In an interview with POC Culture, Eric Lewald revealed that Brad Winderbaum wants the animated series to continue for a decade. Lewald expressed strong support for this long-term plan during the conversation.
“Brad’s [Winderbaum] bursting up and down, and you know he wants to do 10, and we want him to do 10,” Lewald said. He also added a personal wish for the show’s longevity in the same interview. “We want eight years from now to be having more conversations like this about Season 10,” Lewald continued. He further pointed to the vast source material available for future storytelling. “With 60 years of comics and all these characters, there’s really no limit,” Lewald noted.
Meanwhile, fellow executive producer Larry Houston confirmed earlier that the team is actively developing additional seasons. Further, Houston revealed that Marvel has already verbally confirmed a fourth season of the show. He also shared his own aspirations for matching the original series’ run.
“Well, I know they’re going to try and match, you know, I did five seasons [for the original series],” Houston said. Furthermore, he then explained his personal benchmark for the revival’s future episodes. “I’m pushing for five,” Houston added. Collectively, these comments suggest the creative team shares a unified commitment to extending the show.
Notably, the original X-Men: The Animated Series ran for five seasons between 1992 and 1997. Subsequently, X-Men ’97 picks up where that beloved series concluded, bringing back the original creative team. Both the Lewalds and Houston now serve as executive producers on the sophomore season.
X-Men ’97 Season 2 premiered on July 1, exclusively on Disney+.
