The Belgian federation says it intends to continue to pursue its concerns with FIFA over the decision to allow the United States striker Folarin Balogun to have a one-game ban suspended, enabling him to play in an eventual 4-1 victory for Belgium over the U.S. in the World Cup round-of-16 game on Monday night.
Balogun had been sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the previous round, ordinarily meaning a minimum one-match ban which cannot be appealed, as per FIFA’s rulebook.
World soccer’s governing body, however, subsequently announced on Sunday, the day before the game, that Balogun’s ban would be suspended and the U.S. President Donald Trump then revealed he had made calls to FIFA president Gianni Infantino in which he requested a review of the decision.
FIFA has claimed its disciplinary body made the decision independent of political interference but the revelations have provoked outrage across the world of soccer, with UEFA saying the governing body had crossed a “red line”.
Belgium sought to appeal against Balogun’s right to play in the game on Monday but had the appeal turned down by FIFA, which argued the European nation had “no standing” in the matter.
On Monday night, Belgium responded by demolishing their U.S. opponents on the field in Seattle, with their players celebrating by doing a Trump-style dance in the locker room and the team’s social media account challenging FIFA to overturn the result.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) suggested in a statement it will continue to ask FIFA for more transparency on how the Balogun decision was ever reached, with FIFA yet to provide the reason for the decision or provide materials explaining the conversations or calls that led to the call. The Athletic has approached the RBFA for further comment on how it intends to pursue the issue.

The RBFA said it was proud of the way the team responded on the pitch before adding: “At the same time, the RBFA will continue to pursue the ongoing FIFA matter off the pitch.
“The RBFA firmly believes that international football is best served by a disciplinary and governance framework that fully upholds the principles of legal certainty, transparency, equal treatment and fair play.
“Clear procedures, respect for the rights of defence and the consistent application of the regulations are essential to maintaining the confidence of member associations, coaches, players, supporters and all other stakeholders in our sport.
“Regardless of the sporting outcome, the RBFA will continue to advocate for the correct and consistent application of these principles by FIFA, ensuring that any form of arbitrariness is avoided.
“In doing so, we feel supported by millions of football fans around the world, as well as by many other member associations.”
Belgium faces Spain in the tournament’s quarterfinals on Friday in Los Angeles.
