Prime Video has added a new sci-fi TV show to its lineup today. The latest adaptation of legendary cyberpunk manga will offer a fresh take on the beloved franchise.
What new sci-fi TV show just landed on Prime Video today?
Science SARU’s brand-new adaptation of a classic futuristic cyberpunk manga, Masamune Shirow’s The Ghost in the Shell, drops on Prime Video today, July 7, 2026. Directed by Mokochan, the anime has set itself apart from the manga’s 1995-released film version.
In a post on Gizmodo, io9 notes that the new series adopts a “lighthearted” and “goofy” treatment, offering a different experience from the 1995 film, which was renowned for its “austere seriousness.”
In the futuristic world of 2029, where humans coexist with machines, Major Motoko Kusanagi, a “quick-tempered, queer disaster,” and her partner Batou wage a war against cybercrime. Apart from its stunning action sequence, animation style, and dynamic music, the reviewers praise the philosophical and thought-provoking elements of the anime.
The synopsis of the Ghost in the Shell anime reads: “A cyborg policewoman and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master.”
In an interview with Variety, Mokochan, director of the series, confirmed the human dimension of the series, saying, “And so even though what is depicted here is this cyber world, the fact that it’s been hand drawn by people is what gives it, it gives it its warmth, and its appeal, and that was something I wanted to replicate in the anime.”
While Toh EnJoe has written the script, Shuhei Handa was responsible for character designs and chief animation direction. Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha and Production I.G. are also part of the production committee alongside Science SARU.
The Japanese voice cast members include Maaya Sakamoto as the new voice for Motoko Kusanagi, alongside Kazuhiko Yamaji as Daisuke Aramaki, Hiroki Yasumoto as Batou, Yuichi Nakamura as Togusa, Kosuke Goto as Ishikawa, Toru Nara as Saito, and Tomoko Kaneda as the Fuchikoma units.
For the English version, the primary cast stars Suzie Yeung as Motoko, supported by SungWon Cho as Aramaki, Bill Butts as Batou, Nick Apostolides as Togusa, John Bentley as Ishikawa, Tony Weaver Jr. as Saito, and Lizzie Freeman as Fuchikoma.
