Dwayne Johnson has something to say to those thinking the Moana live-action remake came too soon. His comments come as the Disney flick gears up for its theatrical release.
What did Dwayne Johnson say about the “too soon” criticism of Moana?
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at Moana’s L.A. premiere, Dwayne Johnson weighed in on the conversation surrounding the live-action adaptation of the hit 2016 animated flick. Long story short, some felt that the live-action remake came too soon. In comparison, the live-action adaptation of the 1937 animated Disney classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released in 2025. Even the photorealistically animated remake of the 1994 animated flick The Lion King came out in 2019, while the live-action remake of the 1989 animated musical The Little Mermaid came out in 2023.
“To be honest with you, I never bought into this idea that ‘You have to wait 20 years, you have you wait 30 years, it’s too soon,’” Dwayne Johnson said. “I honestly never did, and not because I’m biased and I made the film, but because there’s themes and values in this, in animated Moana, that could translate really well if you saw a real human being going through it, and a real young girl going through it.”
The official synopsis of Moana reads, “In Disney’s live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.” Alongside Dwayne Johnson, the film stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Jemaine Clement as the voice of Tamatoa, a giant villainous coconut crab.
Moana will land in theaters on July 10, 2026.
