Jorge Jesus has been appointed Portugal head coach following the exit of Roberto Martinez.
Martinez, who had been Portugal coach since the start of 2023, departed the role following the national side’s World Cup last-16 exit to Spain on Monday.
The managerial career of 71-year-old Jesus has spanned 36 years and has included two spells at Benfica alongside stints at Sporting CP, Flamengo and Fenerbahce, before each of the last three seasons being spent in the Saudi Pro League.

Jesus has won 25 trophies as a manager including three Portuguese league titles at Benfica, one in Brazil with Flamengo and the Saudi title at each of Al Hilal and Al Nassr.
Portugal have not reached the World Cup semi-final stage since 2006, but did win the European Championship in 2016 before lifting the Nations League in 2019 and then again six years later, in 2025.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored a world record 146 international goals across 233 Portugal appearances, confirmed earlier this month he would not be playing at another World Cup.
The Athleticreportedin March 2025 that Jesus was a leading contender to become Brazil head coach alongside Carlo Ancelotti, who assumed the role after leaving Real Madrid in May.
Jesus, who dramatically left Benfica in 2015 to join their Lisbon rivals Sporting CP, had two stints at Saudi club Al Hilal but last summer joined their Riyadh-based rivals Al Nassr, whom he guided to their first title in seven years.
Jesus left Al Nassr at the end of the 2025-26 season, a role in which Ange Postecoglou has since been appointed.
