England are preparing to take on Norway in today’s World Cup quarter-final, but it is not just the players and coaches who will be under scrutiny.

The match officials will also be the centre of attention in Miami, particularly given the controversies that have erupted at this tournament in recent days — from Folarin Balogun’s red card, to Egypt’s complaints that the officiating was unfair in their last-16 defeat to Argentina.

So who is in charge of today’s match and what do we know about them?

Who is in charge for England vs Norway?

Clement Turpinwill take charge of his fourth match at this tournament, and his second involving England.

He and Tuchel have history. The French official sent the German coach to the stands during Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final exit by Manchester City in 2023 andTuchel later gave his refereeing performance a “Grade E”.

Listed by FIFA as an international referee since 2010, Turpin is regularly seen officiating in the Champions League. He was appointed for that competition’s 2022 final, having taken charge of the Europa League final a year earlier.

Turpin awarded England a penalty against Croatia in their first group-stage match of this tournament, and after Harry Kane missed the initial kick, ordered for it to be retaken, as a consequence of both Josko Gvardiol’s encroachment and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic standing in front of his goal line.

The expert view

Graham Scott,The Athletic’s refereeing expert, wrote about Turpin’s clash with Tuchel before the Croatia match.

“If Turpin is flustered in any way by Tuchel’s presence on the touchline, it won’t show,” he wrote. “Among the refereeing community, he has a reputation for having a calm demeanour whatever a game throws at him, as part of a conscious strategy to maintain control of the match and his emotions. By and large, it works.

“The 10 yellow cards Turpin showed in that Bayern-City match was out of character, as his average is relatively low. He will look to defuse conflict, manage the tempo of play and keep the temperature of the match under his control.”

Scott also wrote about what Tuchel was like to referee more generally, having taken charge of him in the Premier League.

“I was involved in Tuchel’s first two Chelsea matches, both played behind closed doors at Stamford Bridge in January 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he wrote.

“Before being fourth official on the first, I was tipped off by colleagues who had encountered him on the UEFA circuit that he could be hard work, but he proved affable and polite, as most managers are during their first game in post.

“I was an official on many more of Tuchel’s games, and when the crowds returned post-pandemic and results were less favourable for Chelsea, the stress started to show. But he never overstepped the mark and would usually respond to reason.”
