Jake Paul is still recovering from the broken jaw he suffered in his boxing match against Anthony Joshua but he’s getting closer and closer to his eventual return to action.
On Wednesday, Paul revealed that he expects to get clearance to return to training very soon and he’s already deep in talks with several potential opponents for his next fight. Paul was originally scheduled to face Gervonta “Tank” Davis last year but ended up going against Joshua instead before suffering a sixth-round knockout loss.
“I’m going to get cleared officially to spar in the next couple of weeks,” Paul told Pat McAfee. “I’m getting back to it, keep on fighting. Maybe do some MMA.
“[The jaw] heals back stronger. I just probably won’t fight Olympic gold medal heavyweights anymore. I learned my lesson.”
One name that was mentioned as a possible opponent was Floyd Mayweather, who has been competing in exhibition matches ever since he announced his retirement from boxing.
Lately, Mayweather has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons including criminal charges for passing a bad check, an ongoing civil lawsuit and a tax lien from the IRS that all appear to point at the multi-division champion dealing with money issues despite reportedly earning over a billion dollars during his career.
“He needs the money,” Paul said about possibly facing Mayweather next. “We’re talking to a lot of people. I can’t comment. Boxers, MMA guys.”
As far as his aspirations to cross over to MMA, Paul has been teasing that move for several years and he event inked a deal with PFL once upon a time, although he never competed for the promotion.
Paul touted big plans in the works for MVP MMA after the fledgling promotion put on a successful debut card back in May with an event that aired on Netflix featuring Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano in the main event.
While MVP hasn’t announced a second MMA show yet, Paul says he’s still pursuing fights to make his debut in that sport and Nate Diaz still tops the list for potential opponents.
“I want to do MMA,” Paul sais. “We’ve been trying to make the Nate Diaz MMA fight happen for a long time. I think it’s still on the table. So we’ll see what happens in the next year or two.”
No matter what, Paul was adamant that his fighting career is far from over and he won’t allow a broken jaw to slow him down from making his comeback in the near future.
“Definitely still fighting,” Paul said. “We’re in talks right now with multiple opponents and just figuring out when we’re going to come back.”
