The finale of Lanterns Season One fails to make its so-called villains more evil than the heroes. The hit HBO Max series attempted to present a more complex and conflicted take on the classic Green Lantern comics. However, it wound up epitomizing the show’s failure to paint any of its antagonists as truly villainous.

Lanterns Finale Reveals Its DCU Heroes Are Worse Than the Villains

The finale of Lanterns found John Stewart still investigating the murder of Hal Jordan. The trail led to a dead world and an island that had become a makeshift prison for Sinestro. The former Green Lantern revealed that he had been abducted by Noah Macon, who had embraced his heritage as a Manhunter. Sinestro further revealed that he had been tasked by Noah with building a Green Lantern Power Battery.

Upon returning to Earth, John Stewart is ambushed by Noah Macon. The football star talked with Stewart about how conflicted he felt about the Manhunter programming instilled in him by his grandmother. He then confessed to killing Hal Jordan and asked Stewart to kill him after his next football game.

Instead, John Stewart approaches Noah’s mother, Sheriff Kane. She confesses that she killed Hal and that her son was trying to cover for her. Ultimately, John Stewart declines to act on this information and leaves Rushville with Sinestro’s battery and Hal Jordan’s ring. The episode and season end with Stewart intent on becoming an independent Green Lantern devoted to Earth.

The Lanterns’ Season One finale continues the show’s unfortunate tendency to violate the “show, don’t tell” rule of writing. This dictates that visuals should convey information instead of dialogue whenever possible. However, the show is particularly guilty in violating this rule when it comes to depicting the show’s antagonists.

Lanterns doesn’t show its “villains” being villainous

The villains on Lanterns don’t do nearly as many questionable things as the series’ protagonists. In the early episodes, this did help build the aura of ambiguity as John Stewart earnestly entered the world of the Green Lantern Corps. However, as the series progressed, the writers’ tendencies to lean on unreliable narrators made it increasingly hard to depend on anything we were told.

The Manhunters are a prime example of this. We are told through various sources that the Manhunters are responsible for genocide on multiple worlds. However, we are shown little actual evidence of this in Lanterns. The two Manhunters we see, Zoe and Noah Macon, are both capable of love and self-sacrifice. They also both show mercy to the Lanterns that are hunting them, when it is illogical for them to do so. This stands in stark contrast to Hal Jordan and John Stewart, who go out of their way to antagonize people and rarely consider collateral damage.

Sinestro is another example of this. We are told that Sinestro is a traitor to the Guardians and that he killed one of them. While he does not deny this, nothing is said of his motives beyond his ambition being a threat. For all we know, the Guardians imprisoned Sinestro to stop him from exposing their crimes. (While there is nothing to directly tease this in Lanterns, this idea was explored in one timeline.)

By contrast, John Stewart goes out of his way to torture Sinestro. He waterboards the former Green Lantern using the fear-inducing waters that trap him. Later, he leaves Sinestro for dead, despite him being an unwitting escapee. All of this paints a bleak picture, making the heroes unsympathetic and raising questions regarding if the villains are truly villains.
