A Stephen King horror adaptation starring Sophie Thatcher and David Dastmalchian is now streaming on Netflix. The Boogeyman arrived on the platform Monday, October 5.
Directed by Rob Savage, the 2023 movie follows high school student Sadie Harper, played by Thatcher, and her younger sister Sawyer, played by Vivien Lyra Blair. The sisters are dealing with the sudden death of their mother while their father, Will Harper (Chris Messina), struggles to support them while dealing with his own grief.
Their lives change when Lester Billings, played by Dastmalchian, arrives at their home looking for psychiatric help from Will. Billings tells Will that a supernatural creature killed his three children. After his death inside the Harper home, the family begins encountering the same entity he described.
Dastmalchian is known for appearances in Marvel’s Ant-Man, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, and DC’s The Suicide Squad. Thatcher became widely known for her role as Natalie Scatorccio in the Showtime series Yellowjackets.
The movie was originally developed for a streaming release on Hulu. However, strong test screenings led 20th Century Studios to give it a theatrical release in June 2023. It eventually earned $67 million worldwide.
How Stephen King’s classic story became a modern horror nightmare
The Boogeyman is based on King’s 1973 short story of the same name, which was later published in his 1978 collection Night Shift. The original story is much smaller in scope than the movie.
King’s story centers on a conversation between Lester Billings and Will, a psychiatrist. During the session, Billings describes the deaths of his children and blames them on a mysterious creature.
Screenwriters Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman expanded that premise into a feature-length story centered on the Harper family. Billings’ account becomes the starting point for the family’s encounter with the creature rather than the entire narrative.
Savage also used lighting and shadow to keep the creature partially hidden throughout the movie. The approach allows the horror to build around what the characters cannot fully see.
The film connects the supernatural threat to the family’s grief while expanding King’s short story into a larger creature feature. With Thatcher and Dastmalchian leading the cast, The Boogeyman is now available to stream on Netflix.
