The difference between charging aTeslaCybertruck and filling up a Ford F-150 is staggering, but there are a lot of ifs and buts.
The debate between EVs and gas cars will probably never end, and these comparisons fuel it.
But the interesting thing is that while charging an EV can be potentially a lot cheaper, it can also be more expensive.
And there’s another element that makes the whole situation even more ironic.
If you zoom out, there’s no comparison between the Tesla Cybertruck and the Ford F-150
In general, charging an EV is cheaper than filling up a car with gas, but there’s a massive caveat.
The entry-level Tesla Cybertruck starts at $69,990, putting it at nearly double the entry-level 2026 Ford F-150, which starts at $39,330.
So when you factor that in, it’s going to take a lot of miles to make the Cybertruck financially more convenient.
Tesla Cybertruck vs Ford F-150
For the sake of the comparison, let’s assume that each vehicle drives 15,000 miles a year.
The average Tesla Cybertruck costs around $7.71 to charge per 100 miles driven at home.
Using the 15,000-mile measurement, the Cybertruck costs around $1,156.50 per year to charge.
That breaks down to a monthly electric bill of around $96.38.
By contrast, a standard gas-powered Ford F-150 costs around $17.50 to fuel per 100 miles (averaging 20 MPG), which comes out to around $2,625 per year in gas.
That’s about $218.75 per month.
That’s more than double what the Cybertruck’s monthly charging costs come down to.
So while the Ford is cheaper to buy, it’s costlier to keep running on the road.
There’s a major catch
As EVs become more and more popular, more people are bound to draw up comparisons.
We have seen more EV drivers proclaiming their savings in recent years – especially Tesla owners..
But there’s a massive catch because depending on what you factor in, gas cars can actually be cheaper.
A few days ago, we did the math and came to the conclusion that running a Tesla Model Y in EV-friendly California is actually potentially more expensive than doing so in Florida.
This is chiefly due to the fact that California’s energy prices are spectacularly high.
In general, EVs can be cheaper if we’re looking at blanket comparisons.
But, if we break the whole situation down based on country- or state-specific factors, that’s not automatically the case.
