DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has shared a new motion poster for their upcoming mystery DCU series Lanterns, accompanied by an unsettling question. Starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, the show will premiere on HBO Max next month.
James Gunn’s latest Lanterns tease puts DC fans on edge
James Gunn took to X to share a promotional teaser for Lanterns, an upcoming HBO original series based on DC’s Green Lantern characters. The short teaser opens with a question, “Are you afraid?”, before unveiling a new motion poster featuring the main characters, fueling anticipation ahead of the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel.
The new poster showcases Aaron Pierre‘s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler‘s Hal Jordan on the road together. While the new teaser doesn’t unveil any new plot details, the chilling question at the start reinforces the dark, mystery-driven, detective-style direction tone that DC Studios has promised for the series.
Lanterns follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, one of the Corps’ most legendary members who wears a power ring that gives them extraordinary powers. As he approaches his retirement, John Stewart joins him as a recruit. Jordan trains Stewart, and they both set out to investigate a murder in the American heartland only to discover a much larger and darker mystery connected to the larger DC Universe.
The supporting cast in the show includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, and Nathan Fillion.
Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King created the series, and they also serve as executive producers. Additional executive producers include James Gunn, Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt, and James Hawes, who also directed the first two episodes.
Lanters is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on August 16, 2026. The first season contains a total of 8 episodes, which will run through October 4. It is part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the first chapter of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
