The Rookie star Eric Winter revealed to PEOPLE at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that the team filmed an alternate Season 8 ending. The cast prepared for possible cancellation before ABC renewed the series for a ninth season in April. Winter confirmed the production shot two different versions of the finale to cover both outcomes.
The actor shared his uncertainty about the show’s future during the conversation. “We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back,” Winter said. He then added, “We even shot an alternate ending to the show.” The alternate conclusion remains a mystery, as Winter refused to elaborate further on its contents.
Winter kept details about the unaired ending deliberately vague to protect future storylines. “It would’ve been different,” the actor said of the alternate version. He declined to offer any additional teasers, noting that further revelations would be a “spoiler.” The actor has played Sgt. Tim Bradford since the show’s first season.
The Season 8 finale aired in May and featured Tim proposing to Lucy, played by Melissa O’Neil. The newly engaged couple then faced a dramatic kidnapping in the episode’s closing moments. Showrunner Alexi Hawley previously told TV Insider that the cliffhanger carried “real stakes” for both characters.
O’Neil credited the show’s loyal audience for securing the renewal at the Comic-Con panel. “We’re so grateful for the fans of the show. They’ve helped get us to where we are,” she said. Winter expressed similar enthusiasm about continuing the series with his castmates. “Anytime we find out we have another season with this great group of people, it’s an exciting time,” he said.
The Rookie Season 9 will premiere on ABC in January 2027.
