PHILADELPHIA — Jaylen Brown was one of the best No. 1 options in the NBA last season. He averaged 28 points per game, distributed the ball, rebounded well and was efficient by his standards. He was the biggest reason the Boston Celtics emerged as the second seed in the Eastern Conference despite not having Jayson Tatum until late in the season due to an Achilles injury.
In light of that, Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers this summer was so shocking, he immediately threw his phone across the room. His role in Philly, after the Sixers acquired LeBron James, will be different. On a team featuring James, Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, Brown probably won’t be the No. 1 option anymore. Even if he was, his shots and usage figure to decrease.
Brown, as expected, was asked about this at his first 76ers news conference Thursday. He made it clear: He doesn’t care.
“It doesn’t have to be anybody’s team,” Brown said. “We have to be a team of respect. I’m about winning. I want to come in and do whatever it takes to win.”

For much of the news conference at the Francis J. Myers Recreation Center on the edges of West Philadelphia, Brown talked about fitting in with his new team and highly publicized teammates. There was a moment where he discussed how he grew and matured with the Celtics. He admitted he’s had no communication with Tatum, the man he won a championship with as part of a decade-long partnership, since the trade.
Otherwise, Brown said he’s turning the page. And he made it clear he would be entering this new partnership with an open mind.
Brown picked this venue for his introductory news conference because he wanted to begin integrating himself with the community. Many children were in attendance, chanting his name before the news conference began. He talked about the importance of community and philanthropy, areas he invested heavily in with Boston. Afterward, he took photos with those same children, spent considerable time with other community members who came to see him and honored his grandfather on his 84th birthday. Brown then departed to throw out the first pitch at Thursday’s Philadelphia Phillies game.
For much of the time since James signed with the 76ers, one question has dominated the larger conversation: Can the Sixers’ new quartet of stars share one basketball? It’s a valid one on paper, considering James, Brown, Embiid and Maxey have all been high-usage players.
On Thursday, Brown showed a form of self-awareness that should serve the group well if it persists. He acknowledged that shots and touches must be rationed, and he knows sacrifice must be the operative word for the 76ers to reach their considerable ceiling.
The process started almost as soon as the trade went through. Maxey was the first to call.The 76ers’ All-Star guard didn’t want anything substantial. He just welcomed Brown to the team. In that conversation, Maxey told Brown he was looking forward to being his teammate and was there if he needed anything. The team group chat started soon thereafter. James and the rest of the Sixers have been active in it, with regular communication almost every day.

Brown has consistently expressed disappointment in the process that preceded his trade from the Celtics to the Sixers. He was stung by some of the things said about his game and his character, and felt he wasn’t as valued as much as he should be. It will be an adjustment for him to join a team with James, Maxey and Embiid.
He said he’s ready to earn that trust from his teammates, especially James.
“I’m looking forward to learning from LeBron,” Brown said. “I’m looking forward to learning from all these guys. But, LeBron, just everything that he’s endured during his career, on and off the floor. One of my favorite things to do is learn. I can’t wait to soak up as much information as I can and apply that to myself.”
Whatever his role, Brown will have absolute importance to the 76ers this season. Since Jimmy Butler departed in 2019, the Sixers haven’t had a wing player capable of creating the kind of offense Brown can.
While James is still one of the best players in the league, the roster is likely best served by him taking a step forward as a playmaker and step back as a scorer. Assuming Embiid is in and out of the lineup for health reasons, as he has often been throughout his career, Brown and Maxey will be counted on to be the team’s primary offensive generators. On a micro level, then, not much may change for Brown.
Still, this is the most talented team Brown will have played on since his early Boston days, when he and Tatum paired with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward. He’s ready to get it going.
“For me, the work has started already,” he said. “I’m looking forward to doing whatever it is I need to do, whoever I need to talk to, to make sure that we get on the same page, and that everybody’s focused on the same thing. If we do that, then we’ll be where we want to be.”
