Morgan Freeman sat down with The New York Times to discuss his career and future. The 89-year-old Oscar winner returns as Edwin Mullins in Season 3 of Taylor Sheridan’sLionesson Paramount+. The espionage thriller also stars Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman.
Freeman addressed whether any dream roles remain on his bucket list. He offered a candid response about his age and aspirations. “No. I’m pushing 90 now. So, the roles that I wished I had been able to play, Denzel Washington will play,” Freeman said.
The actor also shared his philosophy on longevity in Hollywood. He compared himself to fellow veteran Clint Eastwood. “I’m like Clint Eastwood on that: Don’t let the old man in. So, keep working,” Freeman said. He added that he plans to work as long as someone offers him a part. Freeman’s career notably did not take off until he was around 50 years old.

Freeman explained that practical considerations often guide his decisions on projects. He acknowledged that not every script arrives in perfect shape. “What are they going to pay you? If they’re going to pay you enough, then you overlook some of the glitches in the script,” Freeman said.
However, he noted that collaboration can fix most issues during production. “Sometimes you can mention things that are in the script that don’t quite work out for you and by and large, that gets worked out,” he added.
Beyond acting, Freeman also produced and narrated a blues record due out in August. He co-founded a live blues club in Clarksdale, Mississippi, to preserve the genre. Freeman called blues “America’s bottom-line heritage” and credited the Black community with creating it.
