The X-Men are finally coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has made it known that the next phase of the MCU will find Professor X and his band of mutants “at its core,” after Disney obtained the rights to the comic book characters after purchasing Fox in 2019.
While casting rumors have been swirling on social media for months, the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day finally confirmed that one of the roles had been cast. In the days since its release, the trades have also revealed a few other big names who have reportedly landed roles in the franchise.
Though Marvel was quiet on casting during their big Hall H panel at Comic-Con this year, many fans are expecting a big X-Men reveal at Disney’s own fan convention, D23, later this month.
With Avengers: Doomsday reviving X-Men from the Fox run—including James Marden’s Cyclops, Sir Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique—the new generation isn’t expected to make its debut until at least Avengers: Secret Wars, or their own solo film from director Jake Schreier.
Below are the names we know so far. We’ll update this post as more of the cast is revealed.
Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink has officially been tapped to play Jean Grey in the MCU, after making her debut as the incredibly powerful telepath in the latest Spider-Man flick. Her character was kept a mystery throughout promotion for the film, though many online speculated she’d be appearing as Jean, one of the most powerful mutants in the X-Men lineup.
Previously, the character was played on screen by Famke Janssen in the original 2000s films, before Sophie Turner played her in the more recent X-Men movies.
In Spider-Man, viewers watched the character try to locate her older sister, Sara Grey, who was captured by the Department of Damage Control after displaying powers similar to Jean. Overcome with anger and an overwhelming sense of loneliness, Jean uses her telepathy to essentially hold half the city hostage, freezing them in place with her mind. Peter, coming out of his own existential crisis after isolating himself from his friends, is eventually able to talk her down.
Jean then vanishes, and is last seen on a bus out of town. Where is she headed? Possibly the X-Mansion, also known as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters? Time will tell.
Kit Connor as Cyclops
Though names including Outer Banks bad boy Drew Starkey and The Long Walk star Cooper Hoffman were rumored to be up for the role of Cyclops, Deadline reported on August 6 that Heartstopper’s Kit Connor is Marvel’s top “choice” to don the mutant’s signature visor.
The superhero is known for his optic blasts and position as one of the X-Men’s strongest leaders. He also shares a strong connection to Jean, as the two are often romantically paired in the comics.
Thankfully, at 22, he’s around the same age as 24-year-old Sink, making them a good match should a little romance enter the equation down the line.
While Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed his casting just yet, it would make Connor the second lead of Heartstopper to join the MCU—after co-star Joe Locke was tapped to play Wiccan on Agatha All Along.
Previously, James Marsden played the mutant in Fox’s original films, before Tye Sheridan stepped into the role for the more recent 2010s movies.
Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
Scream queen Samara Weaving has also been tapped to join the MCU, with Deadline reporting she is X-Men movie director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s top choice to star as Emma Frost.
A powerful telepath, Frost is also able to transform her skin into impenetrable diamond. In the comics, she’s been both an enemy and member of the X-Men. As a baddie, she’s been a supervillain also known as the “White Queen” of the Hellfire Club. On the flip side, she’s also mentored Generation X, and not only joined the X-Men, but even led them.
It’s unclear which characterization they’re going for here. At 34, Weaving is a bit older than Connor and Sink, however, likely placing her in a leadership or villain role.
January Jones previously played Frost in X-Men: First Class.
