If you’re a movie buff, and a fan of Westerns in particular, you’re likely very familiar with 3:10 to Yuma, the 2007 drama starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, which is regarded as one of the best the genre has to offer.
You also may know that 3:10 to Yuma was actually a remake of a 1957 film of the same name. The original featured Glenn Ford, one of the leading men of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, along with Van Heflin and Felicia Farr.
Friday marks the 69th anniversary of the release of the first 3:10 to Yuma, which premiered in American theaters on August 7, 1957.
An all-time classic on its own
Conventional wisdom says the remake of 3:10 to Yuma tops the first version, but the 1957 film was an unquestioned success.
Directed by Delmer Daves and based on a 1953 short story by Elmore Leonard, 3:10 to Yuma tells the story of Dan Evans (Heflin), an unassuming and impoverished cattle rancher who must escort outlaw Ben Wade (Ford) to a train (the 3:10 to Yuma, Arizona) that will bring him to prison. As you might have guessed, things don’t go exactly as planned.
3:10 to Yuma grossed a reported $1.85 million, and Heflin won a Laurel Award for Top Male Action Star for his performance.
The film also enjoyed strong reviews
Across 32 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, 3:10 to Yuma has a 94% approval rating, and the film also has a 7.6/10 rating on IMDb and a score of 80 (“generally favorable”) on Metacritic.
“Directed with a touch both delicate and muscular by the great Delmer Daves, it’s truly a Western for those who don’t like Westerns, and will be treasured by those that do,” said the San Francisco Chronicle, via Metacritic.
Additionally, the New York Times at the time praised screenwriter Halsted Wells’ “good, lively script,” as well as the “sharp, business-like direction” from Daves and the “sharp” acting by the cast.
“As philosophically complex as it is starkly photographed, Delmer Daves’s ’50s frontier thriller questions heroism—mocks it and subverts it, really—before unveiling courage without celebration,” added Time Out’s Stephen Garrett in 2011.
