For years, Disney+ has been built around one thing: paid subscriptions. Now, that could be changing … well, sort of.
During Disney’s latest earnings call, CEO Josh D’Amaro revealed the company is exploring a free, ad-supported streaming offering, marking a potential shift in strategy as the streaming landscape becomes increasingly competitive.
While Disney isn’t ready to announce a launch or timeline, the company says the idea is actively under consideration.
Disney Is Exploring a Free Streaming Option
Speaking to investors, D’Amaro said Disney is evaluating a free product that could help the company reach viewers who may not be willing to pay for another monthly subscription.
He also said a free offering could create additional advertising opportunities while introducing more people to Disney’s broader streaming ecosystem, potentially encouraging some viewers to eventually subscribe to Disney+.
D’Amaro stressed that there’s “nothing specific to announce” at this point but said it’s “definitely something” the company is considering.
If Disney moves forward, it would join a growing number of media companies embracing free, ad-supported streaming television, often referred to as FAST. Unlike subscription-based services, FAST platforms allow viewers to watch programming at no cost in exchange for advertising.
Services including Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Pluto TV have seen significant growth in recent years, giving budget-conscious viewers access to thousands of movies, television shows, and live channels without a monthly fee.
Netflix has also acknowledged it has discussed the possibility of introducing a free offering in some markets, though the company has said it has no immediate plans to do so.
No Launch Date Has Been Announced
For now, Disney says the project remains in the exploratory stage, meaning there is no confirmed launch window or guarantee a free service will ultimately move forward.
The comments, however, suggest Disney is looking at new ways to expand its audience beyond traditional subscriptions as competition in the streaming industry continues to intensify.
