Ormund Hightower and Criston Cole might be gone, but House of the Dragon Season 3’s finale gives fans someone new to root against: Ulf the White. After his betrayal of Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 7, Ulf was already on a fast track to becoming the fandom’s new most-hated character.
And the events of Season 3’s final episode confirm it, leaving many wondering if he’ll get his comeuppance. Here’s what should happen to him in the Game of Thrones spinoff, based on Fire & Blood. SPOILERS ahead for House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 8, Fire & Blood, and probably HOTD’s future episodes.
Ulf and Hugh Continue to Be Problems After Their ‘Fire & Blood’ Betrayals
In Fire & Blood, both Ulf and Hugh become traitors during the First Battle of Tumbleton — a twist that isn’t quite as clear-cut in the HBO show. Ulf obviously turns on Rhaenyra dramatically, but he goes against both sides in the finale. That’s a slight change that could have ramifications going forward. Likewise, Hugh doesn’t just disobey orders in the book. He also turns, something Kat’s death in the finale sets up for House of the Dragon Season 4.
Either way, following their betrayals, Fire & Blood reveals that Ulf and Hugh continue to be thorns in the Greens’ sides. Daeron is left dealing with the aftermath of Tumbleton, and the two make demands of him. Hugh even admits his desire to become king, which causes Daeron to throw wine on him. It makes the tensions even higher, but it also makes Ulf’s fate inevitable.

Does Ulf the White Die in ‘Fire & Blood’? His Likely ‘House of the Dragon Fate’
In Fire & Blood, Ulf eventually becomes enough of an issue that the nobles plan his and Hugh’s demise — and Daeron Targaryen agrees to it. Unfortunately, another battle at Tumbleton begins before the two can properly be dealt with. This leaves the nobles to resort to desperate measures. And fittingly, it causes Ulf to be taken out by the thing he’s been fighting for all season: a drink with the lads.
After Ulf sleeps through the Second Battle at Tumbleton, he reveals plans to take the Iron Throne himself. House of the Dragon Season 3 lightly lays the groundwork for this claim, ridiculous though it may be. His plans don’t get very far, as Ser Hobert Hightower — Otto’s brother and Ormund’s father — poisons him. He offers him wine, but he’s forced to drink it as well to prove to Ulf that it’s safe. They both die, with Hobert making a major sacrifice for the realm.
Hobert has yet to make an appearance in the show, but Ulf’s fate is likely to be similar. It might come from a different character, but it’s too poetic to change completely. We’ll have to wait to know how House of the Dragon Season 4 handles it. Whatever happens, we can count on one thing: a portion of the fan base will be cheering when it happens.
