Lucy Davis, the actress best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of The Office, revealed on Instagram that she has incurable stage 4 breast cancer. The 53-year-old shared the diagnosis publicly for the first time on Tuesday, noting that doctors found the cancer a year and a half ago. Davis explained that the disease has spread to her bones, specifically her spine, right hip and ribs, and confirmed it is too late for chemotherapy.
The Birmingham-born actress urged fans to stay vigilant about their health. She wrote, “The initial lump that I felt, wasn’t a ‘lump’ as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny. I almost didn’t bother getting it checked.” She added, “So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything, get everything checked out.”
Davis also stressed that humor has been her most important coping tool throughout the journey. She asked her friends and family to make fun of her as much as possible and not treat her like a sick person. She wrote, “There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell.”
The actress expressed a calm outlook on her future. She stated, “I’m not scared of whatever comes next. I’m at peace with it.” Davis also noted that she looks forward to reuniting with her late dog Gracie and described leaving her physical body as simply going home.
Despite the diagnosis, Davis confirmed she plans to continue acting and working on animal rights causes. She wrote, “I’m perfectly able to do so, and acting is one of the biggest joys in my life.” The Office US star Jenna Fischer, who played the American counterpart to Davis’s receptionist character, responded with support. Fischer wrote, “Beautiful post. Love you lots. And yes to working with cancer!” Davis appeared in Shaun of the Dead, Wonder Woman and Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina throughout her career.
