Kevin Durant’s message to Russell Westbrook following his retirement was not built around triple-doubles, MVP trophies or highlight reels. It was about the habits, memories and quiet influence Durant witnessed long before the rest of the basketball world fully understood Westbrook.
Durant shared a lengthy tribute after Westbrook officially ended his NBA career following 18 seasons. The two spent eight seasons together with the Oklahoma City Thunder organization and grew from young prospects into perennial contenders, reaching the 2012 NBA Finals while both were still in their early 20s.
One of Durant’s strongest memories had nothing to do with a game.
He recalled asking then-Thunder assistant coach Maurice Cheeks whether working out before or after practice was more difficult. Durant said the question came because Westbrook was routinely finished with his individual work by the time Durant arrived in the morning, while Durant typically trained after practice.
Cheeks told him the morning work was probably harder.
Durant said he changed his own routine because of it.
That story captured what Durant believes was often misunderstood about Westbrook. While fans became accustomed to the emotional, explosive version of Westbrook that appeared once games began, Durant described the person behind it as “quiet and methodical.”
“A lot of people looked at the emotions on the court and thought Russ was loud,” Durant wrote. “Nah to me, he was quiet and methodical. He lead by example and once the lights were bright, he let everything out and experienced pure freedom.”
For Durant, that consistency was Westbrook’s real message. He did not need to constantly explain his work ethic or tell teammates how seriously he approached basketball. He simply arrived, worked and repeated the process.
For 18 years.
Westbrook retires as the NBA’s all-time leader with 209 triple-doubles, a nine-time All-Star and the 2017 league MVP. He also finishes fifth in NBA history in assists and 14th in points, numbers that underline the scale of what Durant watched develop alongside him in Oklahoma City.
But Durant’s tribute became most personal when he moved away from accomplishments entirely.
He remembered their first years as young stars, the Thunder’s Finals run, All-Star weekends, injuries and comebacks, bus rides, flights, card games, jokes and arguments. Their partnership famously ended when Durant left Oklahoma City for Golden State in 2016, creating years of tension between the former teammates, but time has gradually softened that chapter.
“I don’t care what happens, can’t erase what it was,” Durant wrote.
That sentence may best summarize their relationship.
Durant and Westbrook did not have a perfect basketball story. They experienced enormous success without winning a championship together. They separated under difficult circumstances. Their relationship became one of the NBA’s biggest storylines after Durant’s departure.
None of that changes what they built before it.
Two young stars grew up together in Oklahoma City, turned a newly relocated franchise into a championship contender and helped create one of the defining teams of their generation.
Durant closed by congratulating Westbrook and extending love to his wife Nina, their children, his parents, brother and the extended group of people who accompanied him from Leuzinger High School and UCLA through nearly two decades in professional basketball.
Westbrook’s retirement has naturally produced conversations about records, legacy and where he belongs among the greatest point guards ever.
Durant offered something different. He remembered the empty gym in the morning.
Because before Russell Westbrook became one of the most relentless players basketball had ever seen under the lights, Durant had already seen exactly how that player was being built when almost nobody was watching.
