Weezer have spent enough of the last three decades shape-shifting that every new album arrives with somebody announcing they’ve finally “returned to form.” With The Gold Album, their 20th studio record, bassist Scott Shriner and drummer Patrick Wilson tell Kyle Meredith that the difference is less about chasing The Blue Album than remembering what happens when Weezer actually behaves like a band. After years of sessions built around demos, isolated parts, and tightly managed studio time, the four members started sitting together in an Orange County living room, throwing around riffs, lyrics, complaints, and whatever else might turn into a song. The result is a record with the thick guitars and live-wire punch people associate with classic Weezer, even though nobody entered the room trying to recreate 1994. Wilson traces some of that renewed chemistry back to an unlikely source: the band’s still-mysterious film project, where scenes were built around the members reacting naturally to each other. “It was so collaborative that Rivers was like, ‘Hey, you know, I really love this. I really love how everyone’s just bringing what they do,’” Wilson explains. That spirit carried directly into the album sessions, where everybody could challenge a lyric, suggest a part, or reshape a song in real time.

Shriner, meanwhile, says the process finally gave him and Wilson the chance to become the rhythm section he’d imagined when he first joined Weezer. “Lately, we’ve been communicating and coming together and really playing like a kind of rhythm section that I have always wanted us to be,” he says. “We finally got our fucking mission statement together. Let’s just work together.”

That looseness also meant resisting the surgical perfection that has become standard in modern recording. Wilson bristles at records where everything is snapped to a grid, tuned, and scrubbed of personality. “Everything is perfect, right? But it’s incorrect. It sucks, and I don’t ever want to make a record like that again,” he says, describing The Gold Album instead as bombastic without becoming messy. For a band that has spent years ricocheting between orchestral pop, synths, crunchy guitars, and conceptual detours, maybe that’s the real return to form: not a particular sound, but four people reacting to one another in a room.
