This guy in Florida bought a brand-new Tesla Cybertruck for $100,000 and, 25,000 miles later, he’s revealed how much it’s worth now.
The way the Cybertruck depreciates is interesting because it’s not predictable.
And this is probably down to a very specific factor.
As for this Tesla owner, there’s a reason he doesn’t want to give it up, and it’s not the truck’s value.
The reason why the Cybertruck depreciates so unpredictably
With most vehicles, depreciation is predictable.
We know that the dependable trucks like Toyota Tacoma depreciate quite slowly, and we know that most Maseratis models depreciate quickly.
With the Cybertruck, you never know.
And that’s mostly because of Tesla’s pricing strategy.
When it was first announced, the Cybertruck was supposed to cost less than $40,000.
But then, when it debuted, it actually cost around $100,000.
Then, through the years, Tesla has upped the priced and lowered it, usually without any major announcements.
So whether your Cybertruck depreciates quickly or not generally depends on the original MSRP.
As for this guy, it actually went better than expected.
The value of his Tesla Cybertruck
After driving it for 25,000 miles in two years, Florida YouTuber Jeremy Judkins wanted to find out the trade-in value of his Tesla Cybertruck.
This is the $100,000 Foundation Series Tesla Cybertruck, and 25,000 miles in two years is pretty average.
With that in mind, the $73,500 valuation isn’t too bad.
A $100,000 truck dropping to $73,500 after more than two years and 25,000 miles means it retained roughly 73.5 percent of its value.
For standard new cars, losing about 30 percent of value over the first two years is completely normal.
However, luxury vehicles and high-end EVs often plummet much faster, which means that hitting nearly 74 percent retention with 25,000 miles on the odometer isn’t too bad.
The reason why he doesn’t want to sell it
In his video, the Florida YouTuber explained why he’s a bit hesitant.
“I am so tempted to take my Tesla Cybertruck to Tesla, today, and trade it in for something new,” he said.
But he then explained that he’s ‘figuratively chained to my truck for one major reason’.
“I own Full Self-Driving. If you buy a Tesla today, you cannot own Full-Self Driving. You have to subscribe to it. For eternity,” he explained.
At the time of writing, FSD costs $99 a month and the option to buy it outright is gone.
So he has to make a choice.
He can let go of the Cybertruck and lose FSD – because it can’t be trasferred – or keep the truck.
Clearly, at least for now, his mind’s made up.
