When thisPorscheTaycan owner took his car in for its first service, it didn’t go exactly as planned.
In theory, one of the advertised benefits of switching to an electric car is that it’ll be cheaper than an internal combustion car.
Mostly because electric cars have fewer moving parts, which means fewer things can go wrong.
But, well, clearly it didn’t really go that way.
What this Porsche Taycan owner discovered at its first service shocked him
YouTuber The MacMaster has practically built his entire channel around the issues he’s had with his Porsche Taycan, mostly concerningdepreciationandhidden costs.
“I’ve not been an advocate for electric cars, really,” he said on the way to the nearest service center in his town.
“To be quite honest, I think they’re rubbish and not the future, but we’re not going down that route.”
However, he did love his Porsche Taycan.
At first.
At that point, when the video in question was filmed, his Taycan had racked up 19,849 miles, and had ‘more recalls than Arnold Schwarzenegger’.
“It’s going in for an aerial, because that’s not working properly, and it’s going in for new tires,” the YouTuber explained in the video.
It didn’t sound like much, but the bill ended up being pretty crazy.
“[The bill was] astronomical. It used to cost me about $864 (£700) for a service on my Boxster, which would be oil change, fluids, you get the idea.”

By the end of his video, Lee was standing outside the Porsche Center, holding his bill and not feeling particularly happy about it.
“It’s the first time anyone has taken the time to explain what’s involved with the service of an electric car,” he told his viewers, presumably because he wanted to start with some sort of silver lining.
“You’d think it’s just batteries, but there’s quite a list of things on them they need to check. Electric cars are more expensive than a petrol or a diesel, especially if you don’t have a charging point at home.”
And there’s another good point he made in the video.
Electric cars generally need new tires more frequently than gas cars because A, they’re much heavier and B, they’re all very ‘torquey’ – and torque kills tires.
In the end, he ended up paying £750 ($925) for the service, with his total bill reaching £1,500 ($1,851) with two new tires
To be fair, he did admit that buying one of the most expensive EVs made by a luxury brand didn’t help.
First, because depending on how you spec it, a Taycan can easily cost well over $100,000 or, in some cases, $150,000.
Second, because it’s still a Porsche, and there’s no such thing as a cheap service, cheap car – cheap anything, really – with a Porsche.
“I think if you’re running around town in a little Mini, and you’re charging at home, it might work out cheaper,” he concluded.
