A UK YouTuber with a significant car collection took it to WeBuyAnyCar for a valuation, but it didn’t go as planned.
In theory, he’d spent around $5 million on his cars.
Among other things, his collection includes three Lambos.
But the unexpected valuation can actually be explained.
He started with a dealer
Before visiting WeBuyAnyCar, YouTuber Mark McCann got an initial valuation from high-end car dealer Tom Hartley.
He wanted to get a more accurate and unbiased idea of what the collection could be worth. to get an accurate idea of what the collection might be worth.
The supercar dealer valued six cars, including a Gumball 3000 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, a Brabus GLE, and a Mercedes C63 Black Series.
The collection was appraised by Tom Hartley for a combined total of $1.8 million, which was already a lot less than the money he had poured into the collection.
Then he went to WeBuyAnyCar, and things got worse.
WeBuyAnyCar’s offer
WeBuyAnyCar is a UK-based company that – as its name suggests – will buy any car, regardless of its condition.
That’s the good part.
The bad part is that they’ll do it at their prices.
This immediately led to a problem as the car selling service refused to value the supercar collection as a whole.
In order to work around that problem, McCann had to travel around several different sites and have each one independently valued, with the help of some crafty disguises.
After visiting a handful of branches, the total quotes came to just $1.1 million, which is about $755,412 less than what the dealer offered.
The biggest drop was seen in the Mercedes C63, which was given a valuation of $190,212 from Hartley and just $23,097 from WeBuyAnyCar.
While the valuation for the Brabus was around $136,500 less than the one from the specialist dealer.
The valuation shouldn’t surprise us
We keep seeing supercars selling for crazy prices, which tricks some of us into thinking all supercars are good investments.
But that’s definitely not the case.
In fact, most cars depreciate quite rapidly.
The Brabus and the C63, for example, are money pits.
With obvious exceptions – the SLS AMG, for example – most AMG and Brabus models tend to depreciate simply because collectors aren’t after those.
They’re great cars and they’re fun to drive, but they’re not at that level.
Even the Lambos aren’t a safe bet.
The Gumball one, for instance, requires a very specific type of collector, because most will want a pristine one, not one with a custom livery.
And the irony is that the SVJ is by a very significant margin the most valuable vehicle in his car collection.
At least potentially.
A low-mileage example in mint condition can easily go for up to $900,000+.
Tom Hartley told him his Huracán STO was worth £330,000 – equivalent to $448,800 – while Lamborghini Aventador SVJ had a retail valuation of approximately £400,000 – or $544,000.
It was the same situation with WeBuyAnyCar, which offered him around £290,000 ($394,400) for his Aventador.
In other words, the STO and the Aventador – even with the Gumball livery – still account for around 90 percent of the total valuation.
Still, the most shocking part, in his view, was the discrepancy between Tom Hartley’s valuation and WeBuyAnyCar’s valuation.
“Carl at Tom Hartley’s valued the six cars at £1.38 million and WeBuyAnyCar it was £823,910. That is a difference of £556,000, that’s crazy,” he said.
Well, he’s not wrong on that front.
