Chelsea have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.
The Athleticreported on Thursday that the two sides had agreed a deal worth £7.5million for the Argentina international, who has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option to extend by a further 12 months.
The 33-year-old was offered to Chelsea by his representatives, as reported by The Athleticon Wednesday, after a proposed move to Juventus broke down earlier in August.
“I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said in a Chelsea release on Sunday morning. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon — I can’t wait to get started.
“I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”

Villa moved quickly to sign 24-year-old goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma as their new No 1, with Martinez — who made 256 appearances for the club and was key in their success under Unai Emery — training alone thereafter.
Chelsea’s move for Martinez followed a pair of mistakes from Robert Sanchez in their season-opening 3-2 victory against Fulham on Monday.
The west London club were entering their fourth season with the 28-year-old Spaniard as their starting goalkeeper, and his appearance at Craven Cottage was his 112th since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023.
Mike Penders, the 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper, served as Sanchez’s back-up for the Fulham game and is highly thought of at Stamford Bridge after an impressive loan spell at Strasbourg last season.
Martinez was Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Arsenal in 2020, and a key member of Emery’s side which clinched two top-four finishes in the past three seasons, while also impressing for Argentina and helping them to the World Cup final this summer.

This has been the long goodbye for Martinez. Having made clear last summer he wished to leave, notably waiting for a call from Manchester United on deadline day that did not arrive, Martinez’s exit has felt like a case of when, not if.
The Argentine repaired bridges with Villa during the season, culminating in another Champions League qualification and, most gloriously, a Europa League trophy. That win against Freiburg, which ended with Martinez hoisting Unai Emery on his shoulders, is likely to prove his last Villa appearance.
Villa headed into the summer making clear that they wished to keep the Argentina international. Emery still believed he was the best goalkeeper in the world and Villa told representatives of other goalkeeping targets that they felt he would stay.
However, with Martinez pushing to leave again and flirting with Juventus, Villa decided to grant him his wish and brought in Zion Suzuki from Parma as his replacement.
The only hitch was that the move to Juventus broke down, leaving Suzuki and Martinez in the same squad. Martinez has been training on his own for the past week as his representatives and Villa have looked for a move elsewhere.

The message coming out of Stamford Bridge all summer has been that Chelsea are happy with their goalkeeping options, but Sanchez’s errors against Fulham have reignited the debate about whether this team can achieve their objectives with the Spaniard as their No 1.
Chelsea have huge belief in the potential of Mike Penders, who joined the first-team squad after a positive stint on loan at Strasbourg last season. But he is 21 and has had just two full seasons of professional football, so it is natural for there to be some wariness about throwing him in to the pressurised environment of Premier League action too quickly.
It is important that any immediate upgrade on Sanchez does not block Penders’ long-term pathway. At 33, Martinez appears to tick those boxes as well as adding vast experience, winning pedigree and another big personality to Alonso’s youthful squad.
It’s a move that makes sense for all parties.
