The New Jersey Devils acquired forward Luke Evangelista from the Nashville Predators for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick, the team announced. The deal was executed by a pair of new head executives: Sunny Mehta in New Jersey and Chris MacFarland in Nashville.
The 2028 first-round pick, which originally belonged to the Colorado Avalanche, is conditional. If Colorado’s 2027 first-round pick is not transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs or if its 2028 first-round pick falls within the top 10, Nashville instead gets Colorado’s 2029 first-round pick.
Evangelista is a young, team-controlled forward. The 24-year-old had a career-high 56 points last season and is entering the final year of a two-year, $3 million average annual value contract. He will be a restricted free agent next summer.
Mehta has worked to reshape the Devils’ forward group this summer. He added Evan Rodrigues and Jesper Boqvist in the Jacob Markström deal, signed Anthony Mantha in free agency and now has traded for Evangelista, who could play in the top or middle six. All of it gives coach Sheldon Keefe more forward options around top-six staples Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt and Timo Meier.
Evangelista played primarily in Nashville’s top six last season and averaged a career-high 16:37 of ice time a night. He led the forwards in expected goals rate (56.18 percent), per Natural Stat Trick, and was fourth on the team in even-strength points (39).
The price was steep for Evangelista, but the first-round pick will likely be late in the round assuming Colorado remains one of the top teams in the league. Plus, the Devils had an extra first-round pick in 2028 after the Šimon Nemec trade in which New Jersey acquired two firsts, including the one now traded to Nashville. The fact that Evangelista is a restricted free agent after this season, meaning New Jersey has his rights beyond 2026-27, also makes the price more palatable. This is far from a rental.
Aside from Bratt and Meier, it’s unclear exactly which wingers will line up in the Devils’ top six alongside centers Hughes and Hischier. Evangelista, based on his usage and results last year, seems likely to be one of them. The move could also lead to another trade if the Devils decide they have too many forwards. Dawson Mercer is in the final year of his contract and will be a restricted free agent next summer. He could be one option to trade if New Jersey wants to add elsewhere to its roster or recoup some draft capital.
