Bill Simmons has found himself at the center of a sports-betting controversy after openly describing on his own podcast how he had another person place wagers for him while he was outside a legal betting jurisdiction.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has confirmed that it is reviewing the matter after Simmons said he used his daughter’s boyfriend to access his FanDuel account and place bets in Massachusetts while Simmons was in California, where online sports betting remains illegal.
“The Commission is aware of the comments made on The Bill Simmons Podcast and staff are currently reviewing the matter,” commission spokesperson Thomas Mills told Front Office Sports.
The issue stems from remarks Simmons made while discussing football futures on his podcast. He explained that there were wagers he wanted to make but could not place himself from California. His daughter’s boyfriend, who was in Massachusetts, instead logged into Simmons’ FanDuel account after receiving an authentication code from him and placed the bets on his behalf. Simmons indicated that the arrangement happened more than once.
That practice is commonly referred to as proxy betting.
Massachusetts gaming regulations prohibit a person from placing wagers on behalf of someone else, while FanDuel’s own rules also prohibit customers from sharing accounts or allowing another person to wager through them. Under the state framework, wagers involving prohibited proxy activity can be canceled and the associated funds can potentially be forfeited.
FanDuel moved quickly after becoming aware of Simmons’ comments. The sportsbook told Front Office Sports that it voided the wagers, sanctioned Simmons’ account and reported the situation to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Simmons later addressed the controversy on his show and said he had not understood the proxy-betting rules at the time. He described the situation as a lesson learned after discovering that his bets would be voided.
Simmons is not merely an occasional sports-betting commentator. The Ringer, which he founded and which is owned by Spotify, has an extensive commercial relationship with FanDuel, and Simmons has frequently discussed gambling lines, futures and betting markets throughout his podcasting career. That prominence makes the incident far more visible than a routine customer violation.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is currently determining what, if any, additional action is appropriate. Legal experts who spoke to Business Insider suggested that the practical consequences could ultimately be relatively limited, potentially involving account restrictions rather than a significant legal penalty, although the commission has not announced a final decision.
