After Ryan Reynolds said during a recent interview that he would “totally” be open to a cameo appearance in the DCU series Lanterns, it appears HBO Max has granted his wish. However, it’s not in the way that one would traditionally think. Notably, Reynolds portrayed Hal Jordan in the 2011 movie Green Lantern. In the new HBO show, Kyle Chandler plays the character.
HBO Max turns Ryan Reynolds’ cameo statement into a hilarious joke
HBO Max’s official X (formerly Twitter) account humorously responded to Reynolds’ comments about being open to making a cameo in Lanterns. They shared an altered clip depicting Reynolds’ iteration of Hal Jordan in a fully VFX-created costume in Lanterns, effectively turning the Deadpool star’s comment into reality, with one important caveat.
The Clip starts with Reynolds interview with Entertainment Tonight, where he expressed his interest in doing a cameo in Lanterns. It then shifts to the moderated bits from Lanterns. Chandler’s Hal and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart look up at the sky, with the former wondering, “What the f— is that?”
In the actual scene, which is part of Episode 2, Hal and John are looking at the bird that John constructed with the Green Lantern ring. However, in the altered clip, Reynolds’ Hal flies around in the sky and performs backflips. “Spotted,” the caption reads.
Reynolds, who is quite active on social media, hasn’t yet responded to the above post. His answer to the prospects of a cameo has come as a surprise to many, as the Ghosted star has, over the years, accepted the shortcomings of his Green Lantern movie.
Following its release, Green Lantern became a critical and commercial disappointment. Interestingly, Reynolds met Blake Lively, who played Carol Ferris, on the set of the movie. The pair married in 2012.
Lanterns, in comparison, has received glowing reviews from critics and currently has a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is also consistently holding the top spot on HBO Max TV charts (via FlixPatrol).
