Former Liverpool footballer Jordon Ibe has avoided jail after being sentenced for assaulting his ex-partner during an argument in which he pulled a braid out of her hair.
Ibe, 30, appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday to be sentenced for assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm, and he was fined and sentenced to community service, according to BBC News.
The former England youth international was arrested at Luton Airport in January in relation to an incident in December, the Metropolitan Police confirmed, and was charged in February. In July he changed his plea to guilty.
According to BBC News, in July the court heard that Ibe and his then partner Amie Mayson had been arguing in Lambeth, south London, when she demanded he repay her money she said he owed her.
The court heard when Mayson called Ibe a “druggy”, he grabbed her by the hair, pulling out a braid and leaving her with a bald patch.
The BBC reported that Ibe, who represented himself, told the court on Friday: “I made a serious mistake”, adding: “I am genuinely remorseful”.
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, 80 hours of unpaid work, and 27 days of rehabilitation activity. He was also fined £764.
Ibe has been without a club since departing Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Sofia in June.
The winger progressed through the academies of Charlton Athletic and then Wycombe Wanderers, before moving to Liverpool in 2012. He made 58 first-team appearances for Liverpool, having loan spells at Birmingham City and Derby County, before joining Bournemouth in 2016. He remained at Bournemouth until 2020, and across his spells on the south coast and on Merseyside, he made 119 Premier League appearances.
Ibe fell into non-league football in 2023 when he joined Ebbsfleet United, and had a series of short-term spells at non-league level before moving to Bulgaria in 2025.
