Good Morning America is heading into a new chapter on weekend mornings as ABC News reshapes its anchor team. The network has announced several changes to the program, including a new role for Rachel Scott. The updated lineup is scheduled to take effect starting this month.
GMA’s major weekend anchor shakeup announced
Good Morning America is set to introduce new faces to its weekend anchor lineup beginning September 12, 2026, as per ABC News. Rachel Scott and Rhiannon Ally will join the program as co-anchors, with Scott taking the Saturday desk alongside Whit Johnson and Ally joining Gio Benitez on Sundays. The new arrangement marks a significant change to ABC News’ weekend morning coverage.
Scott brings her experience as ABC News’ senior political correspondent to the Saturday edition. She will work with Johnson, who has been a weekend GMA anchor since 2018. Johnson will continue in his role as Saturday anchor of World News Tonight, which he has held since 2021.
Ally will join Benitez for Sunday broadcasts. The ABC News correspondent becomes part of a team led by Benitez, who has co-anchored GMA on weekends since 2023.
The expanded lineup will also have responsibilities beyond Good Morning America. Scott, Johnson, Ally, and Benitez will alternate as anchors of ABC News Live Weekend, which begins at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The streaming news program is available through Disney+, Hulu and the ABC News app.
ABC News is also adding Leslie Lopez to the weekend broadcast as its meteorologist. Lopez joined the network in April after spending a decade at Los Angeles station KABC-TV, where she delivered weather forecasts during the early morning newscasts.
GMA senior executive producer Simone Swink said, “We know weekend mornings are precious to our audience, and we could not be more excited to have Whit, Rachel, Gio and Rhiannon as our new weekend team, along with Leslie.”
