Steve Ballmer and the Los Angeles Clippers are changing course.
After initially forcefully rejecting the NBA’s findings in its salary-cap circumvention investigation involving Kawhi Leonard, Ballmer announced Sunday night that the franchise will comply with the league’s punishment and will not pursue legal action against the NBA. The Clippers have already paid the $30 million fine assessed by the league.
Ballmer acknowledged that he continues to disagree with portions of the investigation’s conclusions, but said he no longer wants that dispute to become the organization’s focus. He also apologized to Clippers fans, employees and fellow NBA owners for the disruption caused by the controversy and accepted responsibility as the team’s principal owner.
The decision represents a significant reversal from the Clippers’ position immediately after the NBA announced its findings on September 2. At the time, the organization said it “vehemently” rejected the conclusions of the independent investigation and signaled that it intended to challenge the league’s ruling.
The penalties are among the most severe ever imposed on an NBA franchise. Los Angeles was fined $30 million and stripped of five first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033. Ballmer was suspended from all league and team activities for one year, president of business operations Gillian Zucker received a one-year suspension without pay, and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months. The Clippers were also placed under a five-year league compliance and monitoring program.
Leonard was fined $700,000, while Dennis Robertson, his uncle and former representative, was barred for five years from conducting business with NBA teams on behalf of players or other league personnel. The NBA said its investigation found multiple violations involving off-court income opportunities arranged for Leonard through companies connected to Clippers business relationships.
Ballmer’s decision also removes the possibility of an immediate legal showdown between the league’s wealthiest owner and the NBA. Such a challenge had been discussed after the penalties were announced, but legal experts noted that overturning disciplinary decisions made by a private sports league would have presented significant obstacles.
The Clippers now appear ready to shift from fighting the ruling to managing its consequences.
That will not be easy. The organization must navigate major front-office suspensions, the loss of five future first-round picks and a drastically altered long-term roster outlook.
