JJ Gabriel is asking to leave Manchester United to become a free agent, in a development that will send shockwaves through the club.
The 15-year-old is regarded as one of the best talents in the country, and a potential star in the years ahead, having become the youngest ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy player of the year award last season, as well as being named the best player in the Premier League’s Under-18 league.
But he has handed in a letter of de-registration, which is a request to free him from his contract, in a sign he views his future away from Old Trafford.
United do not intend to grant that wish and feel there is time to rectify the situation.
There had been plans to include Gabriel in United’s Carabao Cup squad against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday but the player has informed the club he wishes to leave rather than feature for them again at any level.
Gabriel’s opportunities during pre-season, when he got eight minutes as a substitute at centre-forward against Atletico Madrid, are seen as a factor in his decision.
Gabriel, who predominantly plays as a left-winger or No 10, scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League last week — playing against opponents two or three years older — to thrust himself into the spotlight once again. His close control and finishing ability stand him apart and those attributes have drawn predictions he will go on to become a world-class player.
Several of the biggest clubs across Europe have courted Gabriel, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He had the opportunity to sign for Manchester City last summer but decided to stay at United after being given assurances over his pathway.
Gabriel has trained several time with United’s first-team and is said to more than hold his own, especially for technique. His attitude is regarded as exemplary.
What this might mean for United
This is major news at United, a club famed for bringing through academy prospects. Gabriel joined United aged nine and he has long been seen as a future first-team player, whose ceiling could be among the very best in the world.
He became the youngest player to feature for United in the FA Youth Cup, and score, when he played at Old Trafford last December, and over the last campaign into this one he has hit 31 goals and six assists in 34 games at youth level, playing against older boys.
He met Sir Alex Ferguson and Ruben Amorim last year, and trained with the first team in a sign of the esteem in which he is held.
But in the summer United signed 18 -year-old Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur, and are in the process of finalising 16-year-old Isaac Konde’s move from Liverpool, two left wingers — Gabriel’s best position.
Gabriel got eight minutes in pre-season, and was not named in the squad for United’s Champions League tie against Sabah, instead playing at Leigh Sports Village in the youth version of the competition, when he scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 win.
Michael Carrick intended to include him in his squad for the Carabao Cup visit by Brighton — but that opportunity has been turned down by Gabriel through his request to leave.
