Dwyane Wade has opened up about how his daughter Zaya’s journey changed his perspective on the culture inside the Miami Heat locker room, revealing that he began distancing himself from certain jokes and conversations long before she publicly came out as transgender.
During an appearance on the Conversations With Cam podcast, the three-time NBA champion explained that supporting his daughter made him more conscious of language and behavior he had previously accepted as part of everyday locker room life.
Wade said he gradually began recognizing how certain jokes could affect people outside the environment in which they were being made.
“I wasn’t in on the jokes no more. I wasn’t laughing. I was leaving out of the locker room when I would hear certain things,” Wade recalled.

The change did not go unnoticed by those closest to him, particularly longtime teammate and friend Udonis Haslem.
Wade explained that Haslem continued participating in conversations and making jokes without knowing what Wade and his family were experiencing privately. As Wade became increasingly uncomfortable with certain remarks, he realized he needed to address the situation directly with someone he considered a brother.
Rather than allowing their differences to create distance between them, Wade decided to have a personal conversation with Haslem about his daughter and why his own perspective had changed.
According to Wade, the discussion helped Haslem reconsider his language and behavior.
“He didn’t know, and he eventually changed his thinking, his tone, his verbiage, and then his actions,” Wade explained.
Wade emphasized that their longstanding friendship made the conversation possible. Haslem was someone he trusted deeply, and Wade believed that providing a comfortable environment in which his friend could ask questions without feeling judged was essential to helping him develop a different understanding.
The exchange demonstrated to Wade how much influence a personal relationship can have on changing perspectives, particularly when someone is encountering experiences they may not have previously understood.
Zaya publicly came out as transgender in 2020, after Wade had retired from the NBA. Since then, Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, have openly supported her and spoken about the importance of creating accepting environments for LGBTQ+ young people.
For Wade, however, that process began well before his family shared Zaya’s story publicly.
It started with recognizing that behavior he had once considered harmless could carry a different meaning for someone else. It continued with choosing not to participate in certain conversations and eventually speaking openly with one of his closest teammates.
The experience also changed the way Wade viewed his own responsibility as a father, friend and veteran leader.
His conversation with Haslem showed him that challenging familiar attitudes did not necessarily require confrontation or the end of a friendship. Sometimes, it simply required an honest discussion between two people who trusted each other.
And for Wade, that discussion helped transform not only his own understanding, but also the perspective of someone who had been alongside him throughout much of his NBA career.
