Long before opening for Bully at Consequence’s CoSign Sessions at Live at Lagunitas, two members of wilt could be found behind the counter at Guitar Center. That’s where drummer Dan Bermudez and guitarist Aaron Liebman first met and learned a lot about the ebbs and flows of rock music’s popularity. According to Liebman, guitar sales peaked around 2005 thanks to Guitar Hero, then slumped until “people were bored and wanted to learn an instrument” in 2020. “All those people who were learning how to play guitar are now making bands in the early 2020s,” he says. “It’s crazy to even say that, but I think that’s partly a silver lining of the pandemic.”
Sitting backstage at Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, California for the latest edition of Six-Pack Stories, the Los Angeles alternative rockers dig into how they fit within this latest rock resurgence. Singer Chelsea Rifkin’s influences are, by her own admission, “very expected” ’90s alt: Hole, Nirvana, Weezer, Radiohead. Liebman credits his work as a pop producer and the music of Underscores and Charli xcx for his love of big choruses, Bermudez constantly hears Vulfpeck’s drumming in his head, and guitarist Andrew Perrea nods to nu metal and “dad rock” he once found “cringe” (Creed, Nickelback, Deftones).
For Rifkin, the band’s origins go back to finding inspiration in her parents’ record store. When asked who she’d put on her Beer Buddy Bucketlist, she gives the answer to beat all answers: “I would say my dad because he didn’t get to see me in a band and making music, which is what we always bonded over, what his whole life was about too. So I’d really love to get a little tipsy and connect with him on all the things that I’m doing now that he’d be really proud of.”
Looking towards what’s next, the band discuss their upcoming debut album, when no one’s watching, and how they approached it after building a band through viral numbers online. They’ve enjoyed the benefits of connecting instantly to wide audiences and testing new ideas, but are cautious about letting the feedback loop be the end goal. “What this album addresses is doing well on TikTok and then leaving TikTok, because you can do crazy numbers on TikTok and then play a show to 10 people,” explains Liebman. “It’s about having that balance of being able to get off the ground using these tools, but then being able to turn it into something in real life.”
