Spider-Man is about to pull an Avengers. Fresh off the wildly successful re-release of Avengers: Endgame, word is that Sony is preparing to do a similar re-release of its record-breaking film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And, like Endgame, the re-release will include new footage to entice fans back to the theater, such as, potentially, Rosario Dawson’s deleted scenes as Claire Temple.
The news comes from Deadline, and though there is no release date yet for the film, there is plenty of precedent. For example, back in 2022, Sony re-released Spider-Man: No Way Home as the “More Fun Stuff Edition,” which added 11 minutes to the film. That hit theaters about eight months after No Way Home first came out, so we’d imagine the wait for the new version of Brand New Day could be similar. And, if so, that would put the re-release directly between this December’s release of Avengers: Doomsday and next December’s release of Avengers: Secret Wars. Could Tom Holland, maybe, film a little extra tease for fans? Could Sony grab some footage from the Russo brothers?
There’s also the box office angle. Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently became the highest-grossing film in domestic history, passing the previous record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Even the Endgame re-release probably won’t challenge that, but it could. Plus, as of publication, Brand New Day is only about $50 million from becoming the first film in history to ever gross $1 billion in the U.S. alone. A re-release would go a long way toward that.
Deadline’s piece only mentions the Dawson scenes (which she detailed in recent interviews) as likely additions, though there could be “more surprises as well.” If the film does come out between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, that sure seems like a thread they could pull at. Maybe Spider-Man gets “collected” by Doctor Doom, or we see the other Peters?
