Former Manchester City defender Courtney Meppen-Walter has died at the age of 32, it has been announced.
The news of Meppen-Walter’s death was announced on social media by his former club Bury, with the Northern Premier League side writing that they are “deeply saddened” to learn of his passing.
A statement from the club added: “The thoughts and condolences of everyone at #buryfc are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
No further details surrounding the 32-year-old’s death have been made public at this time.
Clubs pay tribute to Courtney Meppen-Walter
Some of Meppen-Walter’s former clubs have paid tribute to the ex-England youth international, including Northern Premier League Division One West side Nantwich Town FC, where he played in 2024.
“Courtney was a larger-than-life character with the biggest heart, and he quickly became loved by both the Dabbers faithful and his fellow players, who all looked up to his inspirational leadership,” said Nantwich chairman Jon Gold.
“He left a lasting impression on everyone that was fortunate enough to meet him and whilst there were sadly some dark times in his life, something that he never shied away from, the Courtney we knew was full of positivity and inspiration, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all that knew him at such an incredibly sad time.”
National League side Carlisle United also issued a statement on social media after Meppen-Walter’s death was announced. The defender spent two years at the Cumbrian side between 2013 and 2015.
“Everyone at Carlisle United are deeply saddened by the passing of former player Courtney Meppen-Walter,” they wrote. “All our thoughts are with Courtney’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
Jamie Vermiglio, the chairman of Chorley FC – a club Meppen-Walter played for between 2018 and 2020 – passed on his condolences to the family and friends of the former Manchester City defender.
“This is truly tragic news that will devastate so many people,” he said. “Our love and thoughts are with Courtney’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
“Many of us at Chorley FC considered Mepps a good friend. He was someone who stayed in touch with many of his former teammates and remained a much-loved part of the friendships he made during his time with the club.
“Everyone at Chorley FC sends our deepest condolences, love and best wishes to Courtney’s family. Rest in peace, Mepps.”
