A 2,400-year-old school complex where Aristotle taught Alexander the Great has been uncovered in Mieza, northern Greece. The site includes classrooms, banquet halls, sports areas and other remains that reveal where the future Macedonian king received his education.
The discovery was announced by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, which identified the remains as the ancient school linked to Alexander’s studies under the famous philosopher. More than 2,300 years ago, the young prince was educated by Aristotle, who later became one of the most influential thinkers of the ancient world.
Located in the ancient city of Mieza, the site offers a rare look at the surroundings where Alexander spent part of his youth. Historical sources have long described the relationship between the philosopher and his student, but the find provides a physical location connected to that period.
The remains reveal a complex designed for more than just lessons. Archaeologists uncovered spaces for teaching, athletic activities and social gatherings, showing how education among the Macedonian elite combined different aspects of daily life.
The Ancient School Where Ideas Came To Life
The excavated complex contains several structures linked to education and communal activities. One of the most important discoveries is a lecture hall with stone desks, a feature that points to a dedicated area for teaching.
The Hellenic Ministry of Culture reported that the site also contained two banquet halls with raised platforms where nearly a dozen couches would originally have been placed. These rooms were likely used for shared meals and discussions.
The layout of the complex shows that education at the time extended beyond traditional lessons. Students could attend lectures, take part in conversations and gather in the same location.
An Ancient School For Mind And Body
The site at Mieza was not limited to academic spaces. Excavations revealed a sporting arena and a stadium, indicating that physical training was also part of the activities carried out at the complex.
This combination of learning and athletics reflects the educational traditions of ancient Greece, where the development of the mind and body were closely connected.
The complex also featured mosaic floors and columns, showing the care given to its construction. These decorative elements highlight the importance of the site and the status of the people who used it.
The archaeological remains provide a detailed picture of a large educational center in ancient Macedonia. The presence of classrooms, sports facilities and decorated areas shows that the site was built to support a wide range of activities.
Archaeologists Reveal Alexander’s Lost Years
The discovery at Mieza adds a physical dimension to one of history’s most famous teacher-student relationships. Ancient writings describe how Aristotle was chosen to educate Alexander before he became king of Macedon in 336 BCE.
The newly uncovered structures connect those historical accounts with an actual location. Researchers can now examine the type of environment where Alexander The Great studied during his formative years.
