The fan-favorite character is scrubbing back in, and fans finally know exactly when. The actor will reprise his role as the silent-but-deadly Sacred Heart custodian in a certain episode of Scrubs Season 2, showrunner Aseem Batra confirmed.
The Janitor returns in Episode 4 as Neil Flynn expands his Scrubs revival role
“We’re going to have him drop in for a couple,” Batra told TVLine. “And he makes his first appearance in Episode 4 — if the air order stays the same.”
The showrunner previously told Variety that the revival would revisit the bizarre thread involving the Janitor’s son, a plot point left dangling last season. That relationship, she explained, gives Neil Flynn a natural reason to return to Sacred Heart. “We have a little bit of fun coming up with them and picking up on this sort of bizarre idea that this is the janitor’s son, or is it really?” Batra said. “It gives Neil a good reason to come back if his son is in the hospital.”
The Janitor news lands as Scrubs Season 2 opens with Dr. Cox in serious trouble. In Episode 1, Cox endures endless tests while J.D., Turk, Elliot, and Carla search for answers about why his treatments keep failing. He even needs help with basic tasks, prompting a raw conversation with Carla about the fear of being the patient instead of the doctor.
Episode 2 flips the script. J.D.’s revised treatment plan finally works, but Cox’s insurance company refuses to cover the infusions unless the hospital admits him. That fight pushes J.D. to mentor new chief resident Grant (John Higgins), who resists every lesson and reports J.D. to Sibby.
All in all, for Scrubs loyalists, though, the biggest question remains the Janitor. Flynn’s multi-episode arc puts him back opposite J.D., and Batra’s comments suggest their strange rivalry still has room to run.
