Takashi Yamazaki’s Grandgear moves to MLK weekend in January 2028
Sony shifted the release date for Takashi Yamazaki’s Bad Robot production Grandgear from February 18, 2028, to MLK weekend on January 14, 2028, per Deadline. Yamazaki previously directed Godzilla Minus One, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The studio announced the change alongside several other release date updates on Wednesday.
Grandgear will face stiff competition on its new opening weekend. Paramount’s Longlegs sequel shares the January 14, 2028, date. An untitled Universal movie and Amazon MGM Studios’ Alone at Dawn also target the same frame.
Sony made several other notable scheduling moves during Cinema United’s Fall Summit. Ridley Scott’s Treasure Island, starring Hugh Jackman as Long John Silver, landed a November 11, 2027, release. The sequel 24 Jump Street, from filmmaker Rodney Rothman, will arrive on December 10, 2027.
The studio also added two new titles to its 2027 calendar. Sony’s recent TIFF acquisition The Surgeon, starring Michelle Yeoh, opens on April 2. The Mason Thames and Ella Bright drama Narcs takes the August 20 slot.
Meanwhile, Justin Lin’s PlayStation production Helldivers, starring Alan Ritchson, moved from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028. Treasure Island is entering production first, which consequently pushed Helldivers out of the Veterans Day window. As a result, the shift places Helldivers in the prime summer season instead.
Notably, Helldivers the game received critical acclaim upon its 2015 debut. Furthermore, the sequel, Helldivers 2, sold over 12 million units across PS5 and PC within four months of its February 2024 launch. Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment are producing the feature adaptation.
