Rolling Loud: The Movie

Rolling Loud: The Movie stars Owen Wilson and Matt Rife spoke with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese about the hilarious comedy movie. The duo discussed why the film was a “dream come true” for Rife, the wild celebrity cameos, and more. It is out in theaters nationwide starting on October 2, 2026.

“Hank can feel his family slipping away. His marriage to Melanie is strained, and his 13-year-old son Zion is growing up and pulling away. So when Zion begs to attend Rolling Loud, Hank sees one last chance to be the cool dad. Melanie says the festival is inappropriate for a 13-year-old, so Hank lies: he tells her they’re spending the weekend at the lake, sneaks Zion into the festival—and promptly loses him,” says the official synopsis.

“Unable to call security without exposing his lie, Hank launches a frantic search through tens of thousands of festivalgoers. Along the way, he teams up with reckless old friend Terry and eccentric security guard Linda, and every attempt to find Zion leads to more chaos: drugs, backstage disasters, a Ferris wheel, a mosh pit and a run-in with Travis Scott.”

Tyler Treese: Owen, a lot of the humor in this film comes from your character not being familiar with hip-hop culture. I spoke with Matt Zingler, the Rolling Loud co-founder. He said that element was pretty true to life to a degree. So how was it getting to meet these talented rappers and get a taste of that world?

Owen Wilson: Well, before I did the scenes with Travis Scott, we spoke on the phone, and I remember he was in Houston, and he couldn’t have been nicer. In fact, he said that he’s a big fan of Wes Anderson and the first movie that I’d ever worked on that hardly anybody saw, Bottle Rocket. So, yeah, he was just easy to get along with.

And then doing the scenes with him, he just has a presence. So it was really good.

Anybody that is a Bottle Rocket fan is a real one. So my respect to Travis Scott there.

Matt, I talked with Christine Ko earlier, and she said you and her were kind of competing for Owen’s attention while filming. We’re close in age, so I assume you grew up as a big fan of Owen like everyone else.

Matt Rife: Of course.

What did you take away from getting to do a buddy comedy with one of the best to ever do it?

Rife: I mean, this is so fun. We get asked this question quite a bit in this press junket today about what it was like for me to work with one of my comedic heroes. And his head just keeps getting a little bit bigger every time I answer this question.

I’m now going like this for every interview. His leg wasn’t crossed the first couple interviews, and now he goes, “How was it working with me?” It was, I mean, literally a dream come true.

I mean, Owen is one of the greatest comedic actors of all time, on top of just being a fantastic dramatic actor. And it was really cool to get a chance to watch him combine both these skill sets in this. And I had never had an opportunity at this point in my career to work with anybody of this pedigree who has done so many things that I’ve appreciated and genuinely inspired me to want to get into acting myself.

So, I mean, it was really, really cool to get to share these moments and get to make one of my heroes laugh off takes from an improvised line or something like that. It was honestly the coolest experience of my life.

Wilson: Even just today kind of doing this, I know early on in the interviews when Matt would answer this, he said it was really great. And I said, “Would you feel comfortable saying a dream come true?” And he’s such a nice, accommodating Midwestern guy. He started saying it’s a dream come true.

Rife: So it was awesome. You know, Luke Wilson wasn’t available for the shoot dates, so they asked, “Who else do you like?”

Wilson: Exactly.

Tyler Treese: I did hear that Luke kind of led to the Rizzler getting added to the film.

Owen Wilson: That’s right. Amazing. I forgot about that. Yeah, Luke had gone to a Knicks game, and he said, “God, this kid really was unbelievable.” And so then when we were working on this, he goes, “You got to get the Rizzler.” And just the way he described him, I don’t know.

Yeah, that’s how this happened. We talked to Jeremy, and they reached out to the Rizzler and his dad, and they came to Atlanta. I mean, the kid’s got something that’s crazy.

Matt Rife: No idea that Luke Wilson made that happen.

Wilson: That’s right. Luke saw him at the Knicks game. He was like, “Hey, what are you doing, man?” Like, he is a big deal. Luke just thought it was hilarious. Like, this guy’s got a lot of rizz, you know?

Rife: Yeah, exactly.

Luke, I went to see Avengers: Endgame last night, and you popped up during Encore. Was that filmed with the Russos, or when did you wind up shooting that scene?

Wilson: Yeah, that was the Russo Brothers, and we shot that last year in London. So, yeah, it was fun to kind of put on that TVA coat and tie that Mobius wears and do that.

Thanks to Owen Wilson and Matt Rife for taking the time to talk about Rolling Loud: The Movie.
