Chelsea have only two wins in the first five Premier League games of the season, with Xabi Alonso’s early impression not yielding the best possible results as the team’s midfield and defence have both looked shaky more often than not.
Alonso’s position remains safe despite the slow start to the campaign and the manager is already devising plans to continue revamping his squad, particularly in midfield, where there is a lack of depth after Enzo Fernandez’s sale to Manchester City.
El Nacional has reported that Chelsea are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez and are prepared to spend £102 million on the Spanish international’s purchase after Xabi Alonso provided his green light to the transfer.
Lopez has been linked with the Blues every now and then in recent times, but following Fernandez’s departure, he is viewed as the perfect replacement characteristically and a long-term option in the engine room for the Londoners.
Excellent signing for Chelsea
Fermin Lopez has been one of Barcelona’s best La Masia graduates in recent years and would be a terrific acquisition for Chelsea if they can get a lucrative deal for him over the line next year, very possibly during the summer rather than the winter.
The 23-year-old is a key part of Hansi Flick’s plans at Camp Nou but from a Barca perspective, a £102 million sale would help them with an injection of vital funds as they look to overcome a longstanding debt to balance their accounts.
Having said that, Chelsea can also offer the player an increment on his salary compared to Barcelona as well as a regular role in their team in midfield, with his overall attributes set to prove handy for Xabi Alonso and in the longer run.
Lopez is brilliant with the ball at his feet, especially in tight spaces, makes accurate forward passes, creates quality chances and is able to resist pressure when in possession. Higher up the pitch, he makes late runs into the box to score goals and also has a great long shot.
Given that he is key to Barcelona, they would want to hold onto him in the immediate future, therefore ruling out a January transfer but Fermin Lopez would be a solid addition for Chelsea during the summer transfer window next year.
