Michael Shannon’s Buddy has confirmed its digital and Blu-ray release dates. According to the latest reports, the VHS edition of the movie is also being released, as the twisted unicorn horror hit heads home after its successful theatrical run.
Buddy is scheduled for digital release on October 13, 2026, while its DVD and Blu-ray releases are scheduled for December 8, 2026. Additionally, the VHS edition will be available for presale via Witter Entertainment starting November 24, so it can ship in time for the holiday season. Written by Casper Kelly and Jamie King and directed by Kelly, the horror flick stars Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, and Keegan-Michael Key.
The movie is based on the titular character Buddy, the bright orange unicorn and star of the fictional children’s television show. The character has brought joy and life lessons into families’ living rooms through the colorful world of “It’s Buddy!”
But when one child refuses to play along with Buddy like the rest of the children who spend their days singing, dancing, and helping him spread happiness, Buddy is not pleased, and cracks begin to appear in this seemingly perfect world.
Buddy’s home release brings its twisted unicorn story to a wider audience
As Buddy gears up for its home release, the movie brings America’s favorite orange unicorn in a new twist for a wider audience. Buddy’s box-office performance was pretty spectacular as well, grossing over $26 million. This was the largest opening of the year for a film shown on fewer than 1,800 screens, showcasing an impressive performance for an independent, non-franchise, R-rated horror movie.
Buddy went on to surpass The Invite to become the highest-grossing Sundance 2026 acquisition to date. It also became the highest-grossing film in Saban Film’s history and the third-highest-grossing film ever for Roadside Attractions, trailing only to I Can Only Imagine and Manchester by the Sea.
Now, Buddy is set to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide when it arrives digitally on October 13.
