Sebastian Stan has reflected on losing his role in The Vampire Diaries, which could have made the show look different. The “Thunderbolts” star also opened up about why he has no regrets about turning down the CW series. What made The Vampire Diaries a hit was its mix of intense young love, a love triangle for the ages, and nonstop supernatural stakes.
Sebastian Stan turned down the Stefan Salvatore role before Paul Wesley was cast
Before The Vampire Diaries made Mystic Falls iconic and turned the Salvatore brothers into CW favorites, the network was still searching for the actor to play the brooding younger brother.
Sebastian Stan recently revealed on the October 5 episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he was the first choice for the role of Stefan Salvatore. He shared, “They offered me Paul Wesley’s role. And I had just come off Kings, and I sort of felt really burnt out from that not working out and just sort of the idea of thinking, ‘Oh, I’m just going to sign up again for something that probably is not going to get to the second season.’”
Stan further explained that he wanted to avoid getting typecast in “that supernatural world.” Coming off his lead role in 2006’s “The Covenant,” he decided to turn it down. It later went to Paul Wesley in the CW teen drama that ran from 2009 to 2017 for eight seasons.
The Marvel actor added that he felt relieved not to have taken the role of Stefan Salvatore. Stating his reason, he said, “And then the show went on to be super successful. Now looking back, I feel grateful in a way ’cause I don’t know if I was really ready for that kind of exposure when I was younger, to be honest.”
Sebastian Stan went on to say he struggled emotionally and mentally during those years and lost focus. But in hindsight, he sees it as part of his story and wouldn’t change a thing. Calling himself a late bloomer in many ways, he said timing played a huge role in his journey.
