Dana White insists he is promoting and producing Anthony Joshua’s fight with Tyson Fury, but his angry response to questions on October 6 offered little explanation of the contractual objections a reporter attributed to Eddie Hearn.
“Sounds like he’s got an incredible lawsuit,” White responded during his post-Contender Series press conference after being told Hearn considered his production involvement a breach of contract.
White then repeated his position: “I am producing the fight. I am promoting the fight. I will be there at the fight.”
That establishes what White claims his role will be. It does not explain how that role fits the existing agreements, which was the question reporters kept trying to get answered. When another reporter raised whether permission from Hearn or Joshua was required, White replied: “So I’m producing the show.”
White’s argument was that Joshua and Fury are finally fighting and that both men, along with Hearn, will make substantial money. He repeatedly questioned why the discussion was about him rather than the heavyweight matchup.
There is a reasonable point in that. The fighters should be the attraction, and an argument between promoters can become a distraction. But White cannot announce that he is promoting and producing the event, then treat requests to explain that involvement as pointless.
Production duties, promotional involvement and contractual approval are separate questions. Repeating that the fight is happening does not answer all three.
White also briefly created confusion about a meeting. He initially said a meeting had taken place “yesterday,” but later explicitly clarified that there had been no meeting with Hearn. He did not identify the participants in the earlier meeting.
The exchange leaves the disagreement unresolved. White maintains that everything he has said about his involvement is true, while the reporters presented Hearn’s objections without White supplying the contractual explanation.
His confidence may eventually be supported by the event arrangements. On Tuesday night, however, he gave reporters another forceful declaration rather than the detail needed to settle the argument.
