Moving David Benavidez’s fight against Michal Cieslak to December 5 does little to change its appeal. Benavidez remains the attraction, while Cieslak is the opponent fans will watch him fight rather than a name creating much excitement of his own.
Lance Pugmire reports that the three-belt cruiserweight unification is set for Arizona, most likely Glendale. Jesus Ramos Jr. will also defend his interim middleweight title, while organizers continue working to add Vergil Ortiz Jr. against Keith Thurman.
The card has recognizable fighters, but the proposed matchups leave room for criticism. Fans tuning in for Benavidez aren’t necessarily buying into Cieslak as a dangerous opponent they’ve been eager to see him face. Having three belts involved gives the fight stakes. It doesn’t automatically make it an attractive contest.
Ortiz–Thurman has a similar weakness. Thurman is 37, rarely fights, and is coming off a stoppage loss to Sebastian Fundora. His reputation comes largely from a period that younger boxing fans may barely remember.
Since facing Danny Garcia in 2017, Thurman has fought only five times in nine years. That tells you how little opportunity he has given newer fans to follow his career. A familiar name among longtime followers doesn’t necessarily translate into a large audience today, especially after a defeat that raises further questions about what he has left.
Vergil Jr. would be the attraction in that matchup. Beating Thurman would add a former champion to his record, but it would tell us little about how he compares with the strongest younger fighters available.
Having Ramos on the same show invites another question: why isn’t Vergil Jr. fighting him?
Some fans would prefer that matchup to watching Ortiz face Thurman while Ramos fights someone else. Ortiz–Ramos would offer two younger fighters with something to gain, rather than asking fans to get excited about another comeback opportunity for Thurman.
Ramos is campaigning at middleweight, so the two camps would need to agree on weight. Pugmire’s report also doesn’t establish that either fighter rejected the matchup.
Still, placing them in separate fights on the same card makes the comparison unavoidable. The December 5 move changes the calendar. It doesn’t answer the questions about the opponents.
