The first reactions to Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy paint a bleak picture. Chastain’s first film of the year isn’t screening for critics until the last minute, leaving others to rely on the first reactions from international viewers.
X user @HerbSimon1986 called the film a “pure mess and masterfully cringe” while applauding Chastain’s performance. “Other Mommy is a pure mess and masterfully cringe, but it’s also a bonker fun if you truly want something to kill your time at 3 a.m. It’s like Rob Savage remaking Boogeyman with a prestige cast,” the user wrote online.
Another user, @ratedPDG, noted that the film is “more silly than it is scary.” The user also praised Chastain’s committed performance as the eponymous entity, calling it an “Insidious-lite.”
The Jam Report’s Doug Jamieson called the film “truly dreadful,” claiming that it takes its “woeful script” too seriously. The critic added that the film’s jump scares were “ineffective.”
Film critic Simon Foster also criticized the upcoming horror movie, calling it “over-directed with gimmicky flourishes,” giving it 1.5/5 stars in their review. Most other first impressions and international reviews have also been negative.
What is Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy about?
Other Mommy sees Chastain play a supernatural entity that torments a young girl by taking on her mother’s appearance. The film is based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel, Incidents Around the House. As seen in the trailers, Chastain plays both the real mother and the supernatural entity taking on her form. She is joined by Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, and Karen Allen.
Rob Savage directed based on a script by Nathan Elston. The film was produced by James Wan. Savage, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis serve as executive producers. The film is currently on track to gross less than Chastain’s previous horror movies, Mama and IT: Chapter 2.
Other Mommy releases in theaters on October 9, 2026.
