For the first time in franchise history, Brad Bird won’t be in the director’s chair for a story about the Parr family.
Speaking during a Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival, Bird opened up about passing directing duties for The Incredibles 3 to fellow Pixar Animation Studios veteran Peter Sohn. While Bird will continue co-writing and producing the third installment, Sohn, who directed The Good Dinosaur and Elemental, will step into the direction duties.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bird explained that his working relationship with Sohn dates back decades to when he recruited him to join Pixar following their work together on The Iron Giant. “So, it’s very much like the home team,” Bird shared. “I’m writing and producing [the film] with others, but it’s Pete’s own. He knows the DNA.”
This could be a notable change for the franchise. Bird wrote and directed The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, giving both films a consistent creative identity. With Sohn now directing, The Incredibles 3 could introduce a different tone of filmmaking while retaining the elements that define the series.
What else do we know about The Incredibles 3 so far?
Pixar officially announced The Incredibles 3 during Disney’s D23 showcase in August 2024. At the time, Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed that the film was in development, with Bird returning to develop the project.
Later in June 2025, Pixar announced that Sohn would direct the film, with Bird being involved as a writer and producer. Meanwhile, Dana Murray is producing the sequel.
Story details revealed by the studio indicate The Incredibles 3 will center on Violet and Dash sneaking out on independent superhero missions while tasked with babysitting their unpredictable younger brother, Jack-Jack, as his powers continue to mutate.
Their routine comes under threat when the family faces an unprecedented supervillain whose abilities exceed their combined powers.
The Incredibles 3 will arrive in theaters on June 16, 2028.
