PFL are bringing major MMA fights to Africa – and they believe the ‘world’s youngest continent’ is going to produce the next generation of stars.
General Manager Elias Schulze has spent decades building businesses on the continent, and starting last year has begun to take his expertise into the fight game. Started by Francis Ngannou during his tenure with the promotion, PFL Africa has held events across multiple nations already.
Tomorrow night in Casablanca they stage their tournament semi-finals. This includes representatives of nine different nations and a showcase heavyweight headliner that echoes the controversial African Cup of Nations soccer final as Senegal’s Abdoulaye Kane faces Moroccan Badr Medkouri.
PFL Africa GM Elias Schulze explains what makes it such an exciting market
Fans of most major sports will notice that many of the best athletes in the world either come from Africa or have ancestry on the continent. PFL are looking to find the undiscovered talent in the region, and develop the next generation of world class fighters.
Speaking with Bloody Elbow in an exclusive chat in Morocco ahead of yet another major event for the promotion, PFL Africa GM Elias Schulze explained their process. “African athletes dominate sports,” he noted.
“MMA is a young sport and Africa’s a young continent. The median age is 19, whereas in Europe, it’s two-times that, right? It’s, like, early 40s. So we’re talking about the continent of the future, producing the best talent of the future, in its own lands.
“We’re hoping to build an ecosystem that doesn’t just stay in Africa, but creates these global champions that are known across Devonshire in the UK or in Detroit. We see that very much in action here.
Last year’s heavyweight tournament winner Abraham Bably is set to be their latest representative on the global stage next week in Chicago. He faces Emiliano Sordi after a back-and-forth brawl with former World champion Rob Wilkinson in San Diego in June.
“Those are exactly the type of efforts that we see being worthwhile,” Schulze added. “PFL Africa is kind of unique because it’s a global MMA organisation with global standards, second only to our friends at the UFC. But we, particularly, have this regional focus, and that’s because we think it merits its own stage.
“It’s three or four times as hard to become an MMA professional in Africa as it is in Europe, simply because you have so much more running against you.
“I think that means that the level of grit that these guys and girls, when they finally emerge, will be such that they have been sharpened beyond belief. And I think that extra sharpness will show itself on the global stage.”
